There are some things in life…

I have something to confess. Yes, I don’t watch Big Brother (or its spin-off shows), I try not to watch X Factor and certainly not Strictly Come Dancing. However, there is one reality TV show which draws me in from the start each year, and I cannot help it! (:

But what is more entertaining than seeing 10 z-list celebrities (can you even call them that?) heading into the Australian jungle “for the experience”, and then watching them getting covered in bugs for food. If that’s not entertainment, then I don’t know what is!

</sarcasm> (but I do watch it!)

Beijing 2008 Opening Ceremony

I tuned in to BBC at 12:45pm today, quite excited about the beginning of what would be a very unique Olympiad in its own right. Surrounded by the political controversy with Tibet, Human Rights and the censorship, it’s hard for you to appreciate the stunning work that the Chinese have done without your mind wondering over to the hardships that the nation likes to hide.

But the ceremony started off nevertheless, with a stunning countdown and then some amazing performances from 15,000 people. Along with an amazing fireworks display above the capital, the event was truly spectacular. No wonder the Chinese trust in the number eight as their lucky number…

Deadline - By Simon Kernick

This is the latest in an epic collection of novels written by author Simon Kernick. I’ve been a huge fan of his books since I read Relentless last year. I’ve since read Severed, another great read, and now today at Tesco I saw Deadline and picked it up. So, this afternoon I sat down and started to read, and didn’t stop until I’d finished it. I thought I’d put a review up on here with my thoughts.

One of the great things about the Simon Kernick books is that they’re impossible to put down. There’s always an urge to keep on reading the next chapter. I’m glad to say that this book is no exception. It’s filled with twists and turns at every level, and leaves you guessing so much that your brain yearns to find out what happened!

There’s a fast-moving plot with no lapses of action, but Kernick sometimes goes into the history of the characters at times when you just want to keep on with the story. However, these pieces of information are vital to the end of the story.

As in many modern crime-fiction books, there are some chapters which have horrific events, and some which are downright disturbing. One of the great things about the books, and this book inparticular, is the immense accuracy that Kernick applies to his story about the Police and their relevant departments. Combined with the odd facts about the Police, the story doesn’t leave the fictional “tracing that call takes ages” feeling after you’ve read it.

I think this book is a must-read! If you enjoyed it, then I recommend also reading some of Simon Kernick’s other titles too - Relentless and Severed. Let me know what you think in the comments section.

The Apprentice

Series Four of the popular TV show The Apprentice has been on our screens for almost ten weeks! It’s always a great laugh watching Alan Sugar having a go at the candidates when they mess up. I’m quite glad that Jenny went out last week though! Anyway, this week they have to sell wedding items at the NEC in Birmingham. I hope that they do a television shopping channel task like the last series, although I still can’t see a clear winner out of all of the candidates.
