Geography Trip to Grasmere
The past Thursday and Friday have been somewhat exhausting. I was on a Geography field trip to Grasmere, and also to White Scar Caves. I took 200 pictures, and walked about 7 miles. I also bought bags full of Grasmere gingerbead (you can’t blame me, it’s awesome!). I’ve uploaded a few pictures to my Flickr photostream and there are more to come.
The first day started when we went up to the Lake District Visitor Centre at Brockhole. We enjoyed an hour-long talk from a curiously flamboyant guide, who told us about who owns the land in the Lake District (apparently they’re farmers, not pirates!?!!) and about what the Lake District Authority are obliged to do. Then we continued on to White Moss Common, where we plotted a map of the nearby amenities and then went on a long 4-mile walk around Grasmere Lake. I was less than impressed. Some of us managed to jack out of the last bit, and hung around in Grasmere to buy gingerbread!
We then went to the youth hostel. It was set in nice spacious grounds and we had the annex all to ourselves. However, I found the beds quite uncomfy and the lights quite temperamental (the covers should not come off so easily!!). I eventually got to sleep after 2am.
In the morning, we made an early start to get to White Scar Caves. Much to our dissapointment (well, all of us except Sam), the heavy rain made the caves unvisitable for the sake of flash floods. Not to let a little weather stop us from traversing a cave, we made a run for it and smashed through the gates and took our own tour, the tour guides took us a small way in so we could see a bit, considering we’d come all the way from Preston. Afterwards, we headed over to the Ingleton Waterfalls Walk, where we got a lot of photos and a lot of water! I got particularly stunning pictures of Thornton Force too.
All of this has left me tired and with an awful cold. My idea of fun isn’t really walking around lakes…
